Motorists are currently having a harrowing experience plying some bad portions of the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway.
Our correspondent who visited the Ile-Epo end of the road near Abule-Egba, Lagos, reported that the spot had become an eyesore with stagnant water and waste seen in the numerous potholes noticed at that section of the road.
Some motorists who shared their pains while trying to find their way through the bad portion of the road urged the government to consider their plight and fix the road.
A motorist who identified himself simply as Timothy regretted that the road was no longer motorable.
While admitting that there were past efforts to fix the bad portions, Timothy regretted that such repairs never lasted.
He, therefore, called for a permanent solution.
He said “I have been plying this road for more than 15 years and I can tell you that it is a bad road. They fix the road every time but at the slightest rain, the road goes back to being bad.
“I do not know if the government makes use of standard materials because I see no reason why the road keeps getting damaged. It is not even a long road so I don’t understand the continuous fixing.
“The potholes on the road are very bad to the extent they damage my vehicle and if I decide to stop and check my vehicle along the road, I will fall victim of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority and I may end up paying N100,000 fine for road obstruction.
“It appears like an organised crime. Motorists keep avoiding the road because of its bad effects on their vehicles.”
Another motorist, Olatubosun, sought urgent government help to fix the road.
“I use the road frequently, it is bad and we need the government to do something about it. I once lost my car exhaust to the bad road,” he said.
All efforts to contact the Director of Information, Federal Roads Maintenance Agency, Mrs Maryam Sanusi, proved abortive as several calls made to her mobile line were not answered.
She had yet to respond to messages sent to her as of the time of filing this report.
