Forty eight hours after a heavy rainfall in the Federal Capital Territory FCT in particular Abuja, residents in some part of the city have been thrown into darkness.
As at 11.30 am Thursday 13 July electricity is yet to be restored in Gwarinpa,, Jabi , Gwagwa, Airport road, Central area.
Newspot correspondent that went said the people complained that the electricity body always switched off light whenever there was a heavy downpour.
Mr Blessing Adeoye said: ” Nigeria has not developed a bit since she got independence. 63 years after, we keep experiencing blackout during downpour. I just came back from Europe and nothing of such happens there. Even with thunder and lightning their lights never blink.”
Madam Felicia Oguma declared: Please let our leaders find solution to this embarrassment. What do you explain to a foreign visitor that we suffer uùuùùhblackout here whenever rain falls.
Our correspondent visited the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) for explanation from the officer. None was ready to speak. However one of the officers spoke anonymously:
He explained that while electricity supply from hydroelectric power dams increase in the rainy season due to increased water levels, there is also a downside in that transmission can be a problem. In many areas, the windy rains could cause significant damage to the transmission equipment as well as power-lines that are often pulled down by the wind. Where this happens, transmission suffers and could be very dangerous to the residents.
I presume that switching off electricity supply during the rains could mean one of two things. Either some transmission equipment has been damaged by the rain, or the operators have switched off the light as a prudent measure to minimize the risk of casualties should a power-line be pulled down by the wind.
A third reason would be the engineer who should switch on the light is simply stuck in traffic caused by the rain and/or fallen transmission pole.
