Convexity Technology Limited, a blockchain consultancy firm, has unveiled a digital solution called, ‘Convexity Humanitarian Aid Transfer Solution’, to create end-to-end visibility and transparency for humanitarian aid given to Nigeria and Africa.
It said this would connect all stakeholders within the distribution from the donors down to the beneficiaries. It noted that its solution used blockchain technology.
The Chief Operating Officer, Convexity, Mr Adedeji Owonibi, disclosed this during a seminar organised as part of the company’s corporate social responsibility in Abuja themed, ‘Data protection for humanitarian organisations in the 21st century; A tool to attract funding’.
He said, “Data privacy is key in humanitarian services but we noticed a lot of these organisations are not taking data privacy seriously.
“That is why as we unveil this solution, we are ensuring the issue of data privacy is dealt with as part of our CSR. We organised this seminar to educate NGOs on the importance of data protection since they deal a lot with personal data.
“This solution we have developed captures the Iris of the beneficiaries which is the most unique form of identification, making it personal data. We are even taking this from the NGOs to the government, empowering them on how to investigate cryptocurrency-related frauds and the like.
“This technology has features of immutability and transparency by connecting the donors, NGOs, beneficiaries and vendors together through an app so donors can track every step and how the money is being utilised for beneficiaries. The system is highly transparent because no one can alter what is already input into it. UNICEF saw this technology and felt it is great and they supported us with funding to develop it more.”
Also speaking at the event, the National Commissioner, Nigeria Data Protection Bureau, Dr Vincent Olatunji, represented by the Head, Legal and Enforcement Unit, NDPB, Babatunde Bamigboye, reiterated the need for data privacy, especially with the rise in humanitarian concerns. He stated that it was a way to improve the development of Nigeria.
He said, “The four objectives of data protection are to protect the privacy of Nigerian citizens, to ensure the protection of data in exchange transactions, to prevent data manipulation and to ensure that Nigerian businesses and data controllers are competitive in the global economy. These are fundamental issues everyone should note about data protection. Data privacy is your right as a citizen and resident of Nigeria.”
