The Archbishop of Canterbury has been convicted of speeding – days after crowning King Charles III in a historic ceremony watched by millions around the globe.

Justin Welby, 67, was handed three points and a £510 court bill after his VW Golf was clocked by a camera on the Albert Embankment as he drove towards his official residence at Lambeth Palace.

He was doing 25mph in the 20mph zone on October 2 last year.

His conviction following a private hearing this week came on the same day he made headlines locking horns with the government over its Illegal Migration Bill.

Mr Welby was criticised by ministers after condemning their plans to tackle the small boats crisis as ‘morally unacceptable and politically impractical’.

Days earlier, he played a central role in the coronation of King Charles III at Westminster Abbey.
