The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), on Monday, described the departed ex-Vice Chancellor of University of Port-Harcourt, Prof. Nimi Briggs, as an academic who lived for the good of the country and humanity.
He also condoled with his surviving family, urging them to keep the professor emeritus’ legacy alive.
Buhari’s condolence message is contained in a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, titled ‘President Buhari consoles family of late Emeritus Professor of Medicine, Prof Nimi Briggs, 79’.
According to a statement by his family, Prof Briggs passed away in the early hours of Easter Monday, 2023, aged 79 years.
Until his death, he was the 5th Vice Chancellor of University of Port-Harcourt, Pro-Chancellor of Federal University, Abakaliki, Bayelsa Medical University, Yenagoa and Chairman, Committee of Pro Chancellors of Nigerian Universities.
The President “shares the pain of loss with family, friends and associates of the 5th Vice Chancellor of University of Port-Harcourt, Prof. Nimi Briggs, 79, extending sympathy to the academia and Nigeria Medical,” Adesina stated.
“President Buhari notes the historic contributions of the scholar to national development, particularly the educational sector, reaching the pinnacle of his career, with distinctions in service.
“The President believes the Emeritus Professor of Medicine lived for the good of the country and humanity, urging family and friends to immortalize his legacies,” the statement read.
Buhari, therefore, prayed that God would grant the soul of the departed a peaceful rest.
