Speaking in a recent BBC interview, followed by Nigeria policy, Wike named Benue Governor Samuel Ortom as head of the G5.

“We cannot leave our homes for armed robbers; we cannot do this.” Are you sure? “And we’re not leaving this party,” he said. “We are not like them.” We will stay in this house and fight.

“I don’t lead the G5 governors; our leader is the governor of Benue State.”

The PDP was mired in crisis after the party’s national congress in May 2022, where former vice president Atiku Abubakar beat 12 other aspirants, including Wike, to become the party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election.

Dissatisfied with the results of the primaries, Wike and his associates demanded that the party’s national president, Iyorchia Ayu, be replaced by a southerner to correct “regional imbalances” in the PDP, based on the fact that MM. Atiku and Ayu are both northerners.

In addition to Wike and Ortom, the other G5 member governors are Ifeanyi Ugwanyi (Enugu), Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia), and Seyi Makinde (Oyo). The G5 governors, who were appointed to the PDP’s presidential campaign council, withdrew their membership and have since boycotted the PDP presidential rallies.
