UNILAG lecturer awarded professor of music

A lecturer, Albert Oikelome, has become a professor of Musicology and Performance Studies at the Department of Creative Arts (Music), University of Lagos Nigeria.

The appointment came following Oikelome’s contributions to music in Nigeria. The professor was often regarded as a musicologist and music icon whose area of expertise is on the conceptualization of emerging popular music genres in Africa.

Until his appointment, he lectured at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels in the Music Unit of the institution’s Department of Creative Arts.

Prof. Oikelome had contributed to ethnographic and musical research into the impacts of African music genres on world music.

The professor started his career in 1993 as a senior music tutor at the CMS Grammar School, Bariga, Lagos, and moved to Adeniran Ogunsanya College of Education in 1995 where he lectured in music for over seven years. He joined Unilag in October 2002 as a lecturer in the Department of Creative Arts and continued to contribute to the music sector for almost 20 years.

He is a Google scholar in ethnomusicology, African studies and Nigerian pop music culture, and has over 50 publications in peer reviewed national and international scholarly journals in his name.

Being a director of music, Oikelome has worked with the Unilag Mass Choir and has contributed immensely to their concerts while also being the creator of ‘Africa Sings’, an annual music festival that promotes African music in art form.

Oikelome had also contributed to the development of choral studies in the Deeper Life Bible church where he served as the director of music of the Deeper life Youth Choir for 15 years.
