National Youth Service Corps members have been cautioned against involvement in local politics while serving as adhoc staff of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, for the 2023 elections.

The Acting Director-General of NYSC, Mrs. Christy Uba, who gave the charge during the closing ceremony of the batch ‘C’ Stream 11 orientation course held at the NYSC Camp, Ikot Itie Udung, Nsit Atai, urged corps members to remain neutral and apolitical during the exercise.

Uba stressed that their participation in general elections is not compulsory, therefore, anyone who decides to participate must carry out his or her duty with diligence and with a sense of patriotism even as he encouraged them to make themselves available for training and sensitization.

Her words, “This is not the first time and it is not going to be the last time corps members will be participating in general elections. I urge them to be neutral and apolitical during the exercise. They should not meddle into local politics as they leave the camp to integrate into the society for their primary assignments.”

Uba noted that NYSC management was committed to making adequate provisions for welfare and security and urged the corps members to be security conscious at all times and avoid acts that can endanger their lives.

She enumerated such lives to include: attending night parties, visiting dangerous places, accepting rides and gifts from strangers.
