In celebration of World Day for Assistive Technology on June 4, the World Health Organization (WHO) Europe has launched a new practical guide designed to reshape the way countries and stakeholders approach access to assistive technology (AT). The guide, titled βGuide for Assistive Technology Market Assessment and Shapingβ, offers a strategic framework to evaluate and improve AT markets, aiming to close the global access gap.
Assistive technology refers to essential tools like wheelchairs, hearing aids, prosthetics, and communication devices that empower persons with disabilities, the elderly, and individuals with specific health conditions to live independently and contribute fully to society. Yet today, only 1 in 10 people globally who need AT have access to it.
Backed by ATscale, the Global Partnership for Assistive Technology, this new WHO publication provides key resources such as:
- π οΈ Market assessment tools and stakeholder mapping techniques
- π§ Step-by-step guidance on shaping inclusive, sustainable AT markets
- π Field-tested examples from Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Tajikistan
- πΌ Recommendations for public-private sector collaboration and long-term financing
According to Shirin Kiani, WHO/Europeβs Technical Officer for Disability, Assistive Technology, and Rehabilitation, βThis WHO publication is unique because it offers a clear, actionable framework for assessing and transforming assistive technology markets, ensuring more people have access to life-changing products.β
The guide is expected to support policymakers, global health advocates, and service providers in developing robust, equitable, and cost-effective AT systems, especially in underserved regions.
WHO urges global stakeholders to adopt these recommendations and join the growing movement for inclusive access to assistive products and services worldwide.
