In a striking story of entrepreneurial growth, Bill Phelps, the 69-year-old CEO of Dave’s Hot Chicken, has turned 19 company employees into millionaires after a major buyout deal with private equity giant Roark Capital. The acquisition, reportedly worth nearly $1 billion, rewarded every corporate staff member, store manager, and assistant manager with a bonus roughly equal to their annual salary.
Phelps, who previously co-founded Wetzel’s Pretzels and served on the board of Blaze Pizza, told CNBC that the move was intentional and rooted in a leadership philosophy that prioritizes equity and loyalty.
“I had some investors who were like, ‘You’re giving away too much money,’” Phelps recalled. “But I have a duty to the people that created this business, and I was true to taking care of all of those stakeholders.”
Founded in 2017 by three friends with just $900 in savings, Dave’s Hot Chicken started as a humble parking lot stand in Los Angeles. In 2019, Phelps and his investor group came on board to scale the business into a fast-rising franchise. Under Phelps’ leadership, Dave’s expanded rapidly, garnering the attention of top-tier investors.
Co-founder Arman Oganesyan previously noted that while many early investors tried to diminish the founders’ role as luck, Phelps and his team recognized the effort behind the success and offered meaningful credit and opportunity.
Phelps says he rejects traditional notions of executive compensation.
“I don’t look at them as management. I look at them as partners in this journey,” he explained. “And I compensate them as partners in the journey.”
This story follows in the footsteps of other high-profile leaders like Mark Cuban, who famously made 300 out of 330 employees millionaires when he sold Broadcast.com in 1999, and Jay Chaudhry of Zscaler, whose first startup SecureIT created over 70 millionaires when acquired by VeriSign.
Beyond personal ambition, Phelps’ story reveals a different kind of capitalism—one where growth is shared, and loyalty is rewarded. At a time when many workers feel sidelined, the Dave’s Hot Chicken story may just rekindle faith in the power of visionary leadership.
