Zelensky Ready to Sign US Minerals Deal Amid Trump Tensions

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has expressed his willingness to sign a minerals deal with the United States, despite recent tensions following an unproductive meeting with President Donald Trump at the White House. This declaration came during an interview with BBC’s Laura Kuenssberg, where Zelensky emphasized the importance of maintaining a constructive dialogue with the US.

After a heated exchange in the Oval Office, which left the minerals deal unsigned, Zelensky reiterated that Ukraine’s position must be acknowledged, stating, “We want our partners to remember who the aggressor is in this war.” The minerals deal was initially seen as a pathway to strengthen security ties between Ukraine and the US, particularly in light of the ongoing conflict with Russia, which has seen Ukraine lose control over approximately 20% of its territory since the full-scale invasion began in February 2022.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent commented that an economic agreement would be contingent on achieving a peace deal first, criticizing Zelensky for publicly revisiting negotiations that should have remained private. Following the tumultuous meeting, Zelensky underscored that the confrontational nature of the discussions did not serve either nation and only benefitted Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Despite the friction, Zelensky expressed his readiness to return to the White House if invited, maintaining confidence in the US-Ukraine relationship. He also resisted suggestions of conceding territory to Russia, a proposal reportedly floated by Trump officials. In light of calls from some US lawmakers for Zelensky to resign, he asserted that any such decision would undermine Ukraine’s sovereignty.

Zelensky declared that his presidency is intrinsically linked to Ukraine’s aspirations for NATO membership, stating, “I am exchangeable for NATO.” He highlighted the need for the US to play a supportive role in European defense strategies, especially concerning air defense and intelligence sharing.

As global leaders met in London to discuss a unified approach to support Ukraine, Zelensky reiterated that a robust Ukrainian military is the best guarantee of security. While he acknowledged the necessity of European assistance, he also pointed out the critical role the US must play in ensuring a sustainable peace in the region.

The evolving dynamics between the US and Ukraine remain crucial as both nations navigate the complexities of international relations amid ongoing conflict.
