Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal has expressed concern over the rate at which Almajiris roam the streets begging for alms in the name of Quranic education.
The governor noted that the situation has become worrisome, perplexing and embarrassing to the Muslim community.
He disclosed this during the commissioning of the State Almajiri Integrated Quranic School in Gummi which was commissioned by the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar 111.
Lawal said that most of the people in evil gangs today started as Almajiris, until they developed to become problems to the entire society.
According to him, his administration conceived and executed the school to reduce the rate of begging in the state.
He noted that education is free in the school, pointing out that the school has nine hostels and teachers’ quarters. The state government will be responsible for the feeding and welfare of the students, he added.
The governor also pointed out that the school has a vocational center to give the students the opportunity to learn trades, appealing to parents in the state to enrol their children into the institution as everything is free.
The Sultan challenged other state governors in Northern Nigeria to emulate the Zamfara State governor.
According to him, he would be happy to receive invitation from any governor to commission educational projects, especially Islamic schools.
