Members of the Yoruba Initiative are mourning the passing of their iconic chairperson Professor Adebisi Sowunmi
In a Press Statement signed by its president Dr. Olusegun K. Ahmadu and secretary Olufemi Adefemiwa said the death of Professor Sowunmi ,
a distinguished academic and a forthright leader, whose life was a testament to service, scholarship, and spiritual commitment.
The statement read:
“It is with deep regret and profound gratitude that The Yoruba Initiative announces the passing of our revered Chairperson of the Board of Trustees, Professor (Canon) Adebisi Sowunmi, at the age of 85.
Professor Sowunmi was a distinguished academic and a forthright leader whose life was a testament to service, scholarship, and spiritual commitment. A former professor at the University of Ibadan and a canon of the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion), she embodied the virtues of integrity, intellectual depth, and unshakable conviction.
As Chairperson of our Board of Trustees, she brought to bear her decades of wisdom and an unwavering dedication to the ideals of the Yoruba people. She was not only a custodian of knowledge but also a champion of social transformation. Her ability to blend erudition with moral clarity made her a beacon for all who came in contact with her.
She lived with purpose, spoke with courage, and worked tirelessly to address the issues that matter most to our people and our future. Her influence on this organizationâand the broader cultural and academic spheresâwill endure for generations.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to her family, friends, and all those privileged to share in her remarkable journey.
May her soul rest in perfect peace.
