Former Liverpool star, Graeme Souness has slammed France striker, Oliver Giroud, describing the AC Milan striker as a ‘lucky anomaly’.
He feels that the France international striker is hugely overrated.
The former Chelsea striker scored twice for France last Tuesday as they beat Australia 4-1 in their first game of the tournament.
Giroud netted 105 goals in 253 games for Arsenal between 2012 and 2018 before switching to Chelsea where he won the Champions League and Europa League, as well as a fourth FA Cup.
He has scored a total of 23 goals across 57 games for AC Milan, helping them to lift the Serie A title last season.
But Souness is not a fan of the Frenchman
“I’m not his biggest fan,” Souness told ITV.
“I’m just not.
“I think he’s very lucky. When you mention him in the same breath as Thierry Henry, I’m sorry…:
‘You are smirking, but I just think it’s an anomaly. I don’t believe he’s… At 36, fair play to him. He’s still playing in the French team.
“[But] I don’t think he’d get a look-in at this World Cup if Benzema had been here. He’s had a large slice of luck in his career,” he added.
Current Ballon d’Or holder, Karim Benzema would have been preferred by Didier Deschamps to lead the French attack in Qatar but sustained a last minute injury that ruled him out of the tournament.
Benzema led Real Madrid to the Champions League and La Liga titles last season, scoring 42 goals for the Spanish giants.
