Ivan Toney has insisted that his England World Cup snub did not provide him with extra motivation after scoring twice in Brentford’s 2-1 win over Manchester City.
The Bees stunned the Etihad with a 90+8 minute winner over the Citizens on Saturday, just two days after Toney failed to make Gareth Southgate’s 26-man squad for Qatar 2022.
Uncapped Toney has been in outstanding form in 2022, with 10 goals so far this Premier League season – only Erling Haaland and Harry Kane have more.
Newcastle’s Callum Wilson was picked instead, but with his brace against City there will be questions over whether Southgate made the right choice.
But when asked whether his England snub had made him more determined to prove a point on the pitch, the 26-year-old suggested that was far from the case.
‘Listen, the only thing is to keep doing well, keep doing our best, keep doing well for the team and you never know what can happen,’ Toney told BT Sport.
‘Obviously disappointment [over England], but I know what I’m capable of. I won’t let it put me down, I’ll keep going and keep doing well for Brentford.
‘The motivation comes from the boys in the dressing room, and the fans we work hard and thats all we can do.’
This was only City’s second loss of the season and it means that going into the World Cup break, and indeed Christmas, Arsenal will be top of the table and could extend their lead to five points if they beat Wolves on Saturday night.
