In a bold move to reclaim democratic values, the Coalition of Women in Governance has called for the immediate reinstatement of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) representing Kogi Central. The coalition condemned her recent six-month suspension, labeling it unjust and undemocratic.
During a press conference held in Abuja, spokesperson Zainab Mohammed expressed the coalition’s grievances, asserting that the suspension infringes upon parliamentary ethics and judicial authority. She emphasized that silencing a duly elected senator undermines the very essence of democracy and could pose serious threats to the future of women in political leadership.
“Our national anthem speaks of building a nation where peace and justice shall reign, yet we are witnessing the suppression of a representative chosen by the people. This is more than an injustice against one woman—it is an assault on democracy, a betrayal of our collective values, and a warning to all Nigerians who dare to challenge the status quo,” Mohammed stated passionately.
Highlighting the gravity of the situation, she pointed out that the Senate’s internal regulations permit a maximum suspension of just 14 days, rendering the six-month penalty not only excessive but also legally dubious. Mohammed further criticized the Senate for ignoring a court order which had halted any disciplinary action against Akpoti-Uduaghan, describing this as a blatant disregard for democratic principles.
The coalition warned that such actions against women in leadership could discourage female participation in politics and governance. “If the highest legislative body in the country can openly ignore court orders, what message does that send to ordinary Nigerians?” she asked, calling for urgent reforms to ensure that democratic institutions uphold the law.
The Coalition of Women in Governance has urged the Senate to reverse what they deem an “unjust suspension” and restore Akpoti-Uduaghan’s rights, reiterating the need for democratic institutions to act in accordance with the law rather than undermine it.
