It’s widely assumed that it’s better to be lucky than good but top Flat trainer John Gosden possesses both qualities in abundance.

Frankie Dettori’s suspension for using the whip once more than permitted under new regulations while riding Inspiral at Royal Ascot means he misses the Coral-Eclipse at Sandown.

His absence could have been a huge problem for the Gosden yard who are fancied to win the Group One race and the £425,000 first prize with Emily Upjohn.

But Gosden and his son Thady struck lucky when William Buick accepted the ride in Dettori’s absence.

A winner of multiple big races and the reigning champion jockey, he has won the Eclipse three times including in 2012 when first past the post on the Gosden-trained Nathaniel.

A jockey of the highest calibre is needed as although there are only six entries for the big race in Esher they are all top quality.

Emily Upjohn drops back to ten furlongs after winning the Coronation Stakes over a mile and a half at Royal Ascot and takes on Aidan O’Brien’s Irish 2000 Guineas and St James’ Palace Stakes victor Paddington along with his impressive stablemate Luxembourg.

Anmaat, Dubai Honour and West Wind Blows complete the mouth-watering line up but it will be glory for Gosden with Emily Upjohn winning at 13/8 with the sponsors.

Ouzo will give the bookies a headache and make them go weak at the knees by winning the Coral Challenge at 8/1 with bet365, while Sea Silk Road can win the Lancashire Oaks at Haydock at 9/2 with SpreadEx.

Andrew Balding has sent The Foxes across the Atlantic to New York for the Belmont Derby and Oisin Murphy, also banned in this country after falling foul of the new whip rules, can seal victory at 3/1 with William Hill.

• Cameron Norrie is 6/4 with William Hill to reach the third round at Wimbledon by beating Christopher Eubanks by over 5.5 games.

• England are 13/8 with bet365 to win the European Under-21 Championship final by beating Spain.
