Why we rejected Abia’s five-month salary arrears –Doctors

Medical doctors in Abia State have explained the rationale behind the rejection of the offer of a five-month salary out of the 25 months owed them by the state government.

Speaking in an interview with Sunday PUNCH, the state Chairman, Nigerian Medical Association, Dr Isaiah Abali, said the offer was unreasonable.

He said, “The government had initially promised to pay us two-month salary arrears, but it added extra three months to it, but we insisted that the money was not substantial enough considering the total number of months that they owe.

He said though the government thereafter initiated the “no work, no pay” policy the doctors had resolved to continue the strike action to press home their demand.

He added, “We are already on strike. The strike action started on December 9, 2022. The government keeps saying that they do not have money for now, but they will pay.

“However, they haven’t fulfilled their promise. And this present government is rounding off.”
