Manchester United’s board appointing Darren Fletcher as interim boss following Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s departure would have created confusion over the Scot’s role at the club and was an ‘awkward’ look.

The former United midfielder was appointed the club’s new technical director just eight months ago but he splits his time between boardroom and the training pitch, often lending a hand with training.

Fletcher has a close relationship with Ed Woodward, United’s executive vice-chairman and the Scot was a leading contender to take charge of the side for today’s clash against Villarreal after Woodward sacked Solskjaer.

However, the Athletic say that the move would have represented a potential conflict of interest as Fletcher should technically be evaluating the manager’s position and could be involved with the search for the Norwegian’s replacement.

It was also felt that the move would be an ‘awkward’ look as it gave the wrong impression of Fletcher’s role at the club and Woodward decided to give the role to Carrick.

Carrick is a popular figure with the squad, though there are concerns that he will simply continue the job that Solskjaer was doing and there will not be a significant departure from the Norwegian’s reign.

United must avoid defeat in Spain if they’re to keep qualification for the last-16 of the Champions League in their own hands.

Mauricio Pochettino is the leading contender to become United’s next permanent manager and the Argentine is said to be open to taking over mid-season.

However, United would need to buyout his contract, while the French club would want a replacement lined up before releasing the former Tottenham boss.
