Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has explained his decision to leave MLS club DC United after just over a year.

Rooney also revealed that he turned down a job offer last month.

Newspot recalls that DC United announced on Saturday that it had parted company with Rooney via mutual consent after their 2-0 win over New York City FC on Saturday.

Although the club signed off the season with a victory over New York City, results elsewhere meant they were unable to make the MLS playoffs.

Speaking in his post-match press conference, Rooney, who was linked with the Birmingham job last month, announced he had decided to step down from his role because he was keen to return to the UK and spend more time with his family.

“I think it is just the right time. I think I have done everything I can to try and get the club into the playoffs,” Rooney said.

“And it’s not a single thing which has happened; it’s about timing in your career. I have really enjoyed my time here. I have had a lot of help from the owners. Everyone around the club has been a great help to me.

“But I just feel it is the right time for me to go back to England. Firstly, obviously, to see my family, I have not seen them for a long time.”

On the job offer he received a few weeks ago, the 37-year-old added: “I said to the owners I got offered a job four weeks ago, very close to my home in England. I turned that down because I wanted to push and do everything I can to make the playoffs here.”
