Diving is one of the most-loved sports at the Olympics – but those tuning in to watch are sometimes confused by the various aspects of the adrenaline-filled sport.
Chief amongst them is why some diving scores are crossed out on the TV graphics.

Why are some diving scores crossed out in the Olympics?
Eleven judges score competitors in the synchronised diving events.
Six of them are tasked with judging the divers’ execution (three per dive), while five judge synchronisation.
The five synchronisation judges award their marks on approach, take off, timing of movements, angles of entry, distance from the board and timings of entry.
The middle scores for each diver’s execution is kept.
The highest and lowest scores are discarded, however, and this is to ensure that no single judge can have an overly significant effect on the final result.
These scores are then multiplied by 0.6 to make them comparable to the scores which are used in individual diving competitions.
They are then multiplied by the level of difficulty which produces the final overall score.
In individual diving, the two highest and the two lowest judges’ scores are discarded.
Therefore, only the scores from the middle three scoring judges are taken into account.
