The World Cup 2022 final will take place in Qatar on Sunday, with a slice of history up for grabs for both sets of players.

But it is not just the Argentinian and French players who will be taking part in the biggest match of their careers – the game will also be the pinnacle for referee Szymon Marciniak.

Given the magnitude of the fixture, the eyes of the world will be on the referee, with every decision scrutinised in TV studios, living rooms and pubs around the world.

But who exactly is the man refereeing the World Cup final?

Here is everything you need to know.

Who is the World Cup final referee Szymon Marciniak?

Marciniak has been a professional referee since 2006, taking charge of his first top-flight Polish league game in 2009.

His assignment in Sunday’s showpiece will see him become the first Polish referee to take charge of a World Cup final.

The 41 year-old has already refereed both teams in this year’s tournament, taking charge of France’s group stage win over Denmark, followed by Argentina’s round of 16 victory over Australia.

Marciniak missed Euro 2020 after being diagnosed with tachycardia, a condition which involves the heart beating abnormally fast.

The Pole has been FIFA listed since 2011 and has refereed multiple Champions League and Europa League fixtures since then.

Marciniak refereed the 2018 UEFA Super Cup Final between Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid in Tallinn, Estonia.

He referred two group stage games at the World Cup in Russia four years ago; Argentina vs Iceland and Germany vs Sweden.

Marciniak was also a referee during Euro 2016, taking charge of two group games and one in the round of 16.

The popular referee was an official at the FIFA Arab Cup test event in Qatar last year.
