“The inability of federal and state governments to do more to secure our lives in the face of this mounting insurgency is simply further evidence of a dysfunctional Nigerian Constution. This simply reawakens and reinforces the call for Restructuring.

Amotekun was designed to assist with policing local communities and forests NOT to interdict hardened criminals and insurgents. It was thus failure of intelligence that led to the unfortunate harvest of deaths at Owo as reported in the past few days. May the souls of the departed RIP.
While policing is not the exclusive duty of the NPF, it is best left to them WHEREVER THEY ARE ON GROUND. But existing laws do permit even ordinary citizens to arrest miscreants and to immediately hand them over to the police for investigation and prosecution. Friction arises when the police then decline to prosecute based on “orders from above”
Consequently and for as long as our Constution is interpreted as leaving the control of formal policing in the hands of the Nigeria Police with its headquarters in faraway Abuja, local people who hardly travel outside their states will continue to feel unconsulted and insecure in their local communities.
They may thus feel obliged to resort to self-help to protect their livelihood, especially in remote communities that are usually underpoliced, which is the case the world over
But with the currently raised level of ethnic tension in the country, what we DONT need is a situation where our passionate SW youth feel encouraged to carry cutlasses and dane guns to protect their communities from herdsmen only to end up facing the AK47 and M50 machine guns of insurgents WITHOUT ANY ARMED POLICE OR MILITARY BACK-UP.
The inability of federal and state governments to do more to secure our lives in the face of this mounting insurgency is simply further evidence of a dysfunctional Nigerian Constution. This simply reawakens and reinforces the call for Restructuring.
Meanwhile, reports in the media seem to suggest reluctance in the Police  command to see Amotekun succeed independently of the NPF’s federally focused structure.
This needs to be investigated and if true, it must be urgently corrected and their relationship harmonized.
But right now, in view of this rising insurgency in the SW region, what we immediately need are plans on:
a) how our people in their local communities can improve the monitoring of itinerants.
b) how our people can identify bandits and insurgents seperately from herdsmen and avoid getting killed while trying to farm
c) what to do to protect ourselves against bandits (especially in rural comunities) where police are few and far between, and where Amotekun is seriously outgunned

It is preferable if the struggle to develop the SW region and Nigeria is pursued without our youngsters getting killed for no good reason. By that I mean first show us what our youths are to die for, and why that goal can’t be achieved by peaceful means – like Restructuring and good governance
