Three Premier League teams will be in the hat after Liverpool, West Ham and Brighton all won their groups. As did Rangers, Atalanta, Villarreal, Slavia Prague and Bayer Leverkusen.
Those eight teams are the seeded teamsin Friday’s draw, joined by the eight winners of the knockout round play-offs.
The play-offs saw the eight teams that finished second in their Europa League groups take on the eight sides that finished third in their Champions League groups.
It may be expected that the Champions League teams would be favourites in those ties but six of the eight play-offs were won by the teams who had already played in the Europa League.
The teams that came through and will be unseeded in Friday’s draw are: Roma, AC Milan, SC Freiburg, Sporting, Benfica, Qarabag, Sparta Prague and Marseille.
Of the eight winners, just AC Milan and Benfica had dropped down from the Champions League.
