The World Cup will start just one week after the Premier League stops for the tournament, meaning that players with even a minor injury could miss the entirety of the competition.
And the congestion caused to the domestic fixture list to accommodate the World Cup taking place in the middle of the season has already taken its toll on Premier League players with a spate of injuries to high profile stars.
Let’s take a look inside the Premier League treatment room at the players missing the World Cup with injury.
Which Premier League players will be injured for the World Cup?
The following players have been officially ruled out of the World Cup.
Emile Smith-Rowe
The talented young Arsenal midfielder underwent surgery on his groin back in September and it is hoped he will return to full training in December.
Jakub Moder
Poland will be without Brighton’s Moder for the World Cup, with the 23 year-old not set to return until next year after rupturing his ACL against Norwich last season.
Ricardo Pereira
Leicester fullback Ricardo ruptured his right Achilles tendon in the club’s final pre-season friendly before the start of the 2022/23 season, with the Portuguese expected to be sidelined until February.
N’Golo Kante
Kante – who starred for France in the last World Cup four years ago – will miss the 2022 edition having undergone hamstring surgery in October, and will not return until after the New Year.
Arthur Melo
Diogo Jota
Jota, who looked well placed to accompany Cristiano Ronaldo in Portugal’s forward line in Qatar, seriously injured his calf in the 1-0 win over Manchester City in mid-October and will not be fit enough to return until the start of 2023.
Pedro Neto
Portugal have been hit heavily with injuries to their Premier League contingent, with the Wolves ace having undergone surgery on the ankle injury sustained against West Ham on October 1.
