Frank Leboeuf has named the club Cristiano Ronaldo should join next after leaving Manchester United and has warned Chelsea over making a move.
United terminated Ronaldo’s contract with immediate effect on Tuesday with the player now able to join whichever club he likes.
United were furious with Ronaldo’s criticism of Erik ten Hag and the club’s owners during his extensive interview with Piers Morgan, which aired in two parts on TalkTV last week.
Ronaldo claimed he had ‘no respect’ for Ten Hag and accused the Glazer family of failing to improve United’s facilities at the club’s training ground since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013.
The 37-year-old, currently out in Qatar as Portugal’s World Cup campaign gets started on Thursday, has been linked with Chelsea, Bayern Munich and Sporting Lisbon among other clubs.
‘Do you know, last summer, I thought Chelsea had a chance to have him,’ former Blues defender Leboeuf told ESPN FC.
‘I thought because of the season he had last season, it would have been a good idea, because Chelsea had something [lacking] in their front line.
‘But this season, with the season he is having, I don’t really want to see him.’
It is thought that Chelsea are not currently exploring the possibility of bringing Ronaldo to Stamford Bridge, despite owner Todd Boehly being keen in the summer.
Pressed on why he did not want Chelsea to sign Ronaldo in January, Leboeuf added: ‘You have to change your game [plan] because of the attention you have to give to Ronaldo.
‘When he is on the field you have to play for him, we have talked about that many times.
‘He hasn’t got the power of changing a game like he used to have.
‘With all due respect, he was a fantastic player, but he is not the same. That is clear and we can all see that.
‘Maybe to re-join the team he started with, Sporting Lisbon, would be a great idea.’
