Tottenham Hotspur captain Son Heung-min will leave to play for South Korea in the Asian Cup after the Premier League clash with Bournemouth on 31 December.

The 31-year-old has been in fine form this season, playing as a central striker since the summer departure of Harry Kane, scoring 10 goals in 15 Premier League appearances.

However, manager Ange Postecoglou will be without his skipper for a period of time at the start of 2024, potentially missing five games.

The Asian Cup runs from 12 January – 10 February and South Korea are one of the favourites to go deep in the competition.

Son’s national team play a pre-tournament friendly on 6 January, with their group games against Bahrain (15), Jordan (20) and Malaysia (25). The knockout phase then runs from 28 January – 10 February in Qatar.

Spurs currently have three matches scheduled for January, taking on Burnley in the FA Cup (5), then travelling to Manchester United (14) and hosting Brentford (30) in the Premier League.

If Tottenham beat Burnley on 5 January then the fourth round of the FA Cup is played over the weekend of the 27, so that will be another fixture they face with out Son.

At the start of February they go to Everton (3) and then host Brighton (10) in the Premier League and will hope to have Son back for that match with the Seagulls, but he may not return until they take on Wolves (17).

Tottenham games Son could miss

January

5 – Burnley (h) – FA Cup third round

14 – Man Utd (a) – Premier League

30 – Brentford (h) – Premier League

February

3 – Everton (a) – Premier League

Spurs icon Jurgen Klinsmann is manager of South Korea and said: ‘I’m really sorry, but someone has to win the Asian Cup. Unfortunately, the competition starts in early January, so he will be gone from the 2 January, until hopefully the final on the 10 February.

‘So it’s more than five weeks he’ll be gone from Spurs. The same with the other players who play in Europe who will contribute in that competition.’

Tottenham are also going to be affected by the Africa Cup of Nations, which runs from 13 January – 11 February as they will lose Yves Bissouma and Pape Sarr to Mali and Senegal respectively.
