Twelve years after being awarded the FIFA World Cup, Qatar will open its doors to the world with the official opening ceremony marking the start of the tournament.
The build-up to the event has been dominated with controversy over Qatar’s treatment of migrant workers, LGBTQ+ discrimination and their human rights record.
It is expected that the hosts will pull out all the stops to hold an opening night extravaganza in front of the millions of people watching back home.

What time does the World Cup opening ceremony start?
The opening ceremony for Qatar 2022 will take place at 3pm GMT on Sunday, November 20.
The show will be held at the Al Bayt Stadium in Al Khor, just one hour before Qatar face Ecuador in the first match of the World Cup.
How to watch the World Cup opening ceremony on TV
The opening ceremony will be shown live on BBC One in the UK, as part of the build-up coverage ahead of the Group A game.
Viewers can also watch the ceremony on BBC iPlayer and the BBC Sport website.
Who is performing at the World Cup opening ceremony?
The official list has not yet been confirmed by FIFA, although K-Pop star Jung Kook has announced on Twitter that his band BTS will be performing at the ceremony.
Canadian actress and singer Nora Fatehi is widely tipped to be singing the official World Cup song, Light the Sky.
