Ralf Rangnick confronted referee Paul Tierney to voice his complaints over Leeds’ second goal in Manchester United’s win at Elland Road.

The Red Devils recorded a 4-2 win over their rivals but had to work for the three points in the latter stages of the game having conceded two goals in 24 seconds at the start of the second half.

United had just conceded a freak goal when Rodrigo’s cross found the back of the net before losing the ball straight from kick-off in the build-up to Raphinha’s equaliser.

Bruno Fernandes took too long on the ball and went down clutching his leg after a strong challenge by Adam Forshaw to gain possession and seconds later Raphinha had converted from Dan James’ scross.

United’s players pleaded for a free-kick as the Portuguese stayed down but after a VAR check the goal stood.

Former RB Leipzig boss Rangnick clearly wasn’t satisifed with Tierney’s decision though and wanted clarity at full-time.

‘There were quite a few challenges today where in Germany, there would have been no discussion whatsoever,’ said the German.

‘I spoke to the referee after the game about that tackle on Bruno that led to their equaliser and said in Germany they wouldn’t have even asked the VAR.

‘The referee said to me, quite funnily, “that is why you had to come to England!” We did well and showed character.’

Upon watching the replays of Forshaw’s tackle on Fernandes, United legend Gary Neville concluded it wasn’t a foul.

‘I’m not sure that’s a foul. There isn’t too much in it, I’d be surprised if they overturn it,’ he said on commentary.

‘It’s onside, it’s just that challenge, Forshaw on Fernandes. Harry Maguire pleads for the foul.’

Second-half goals from substitutes Fred and Anthony Elanga eventually saw out the game with Harry Maguire and Fernandes getting on the scoresheet in the first half.
