Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba apologised to his team-mates in the dressing room following his costly mistake in the Red Devils’ 1-1 draw against West Ham United.

The Frenchman handled in the box on the stroke of half-time, which allowed Michail Antonio to step-up and slot home from 12 yards.

Pogba handled from a Declan Rice shot that appeared to be going wide and Gary Neville slammed the Frenchman for either failing to get out of the way or for taking the shot in the face.

Mason Greenwood equalised after the break but United ideally needed a win to provide extra comfort going into the final day at Leicester.

And captain Harry Maguire has revealed that Pogba was apologetic to his team-mates afterwards, admitting that he made a mistake.

‘You can say that it’s a natural reaction from Paul,’ said Maguire.

‘Should he do it? He should probably take one in the face.

‘He’s apologised in there. He held his hands up.’

The draw means United must avoid defeat away at Leicester on the final day if they’re to secure a top four finish.

The game against West Ham was United’s fourth match in nine days and they’ve won just one of those matches.

Maguire admits it’s been a testing period but says the fixture list cannot be used as an excuse.

‘The schedule has been ridiculous,’ said Maguire.

‘I think it’s four [games] in nine days or something. It’s no excuse, we’re fully prepared.’
