The lawmaker representing Mangu/Bokkos Federal Constituency in Plateau State, Solomon Maren, has disclosed that his constituents have buried over 30 persons killed by armed herders in the renewed killings in the state.
The lawmaker disclosed this on Thursday while speaking to journalists in Abuja.
He stated that armed herdsmen have attacked several communities in the constituency killing several people. He disclosed that farmers are reluctant to go to farms for fear of being killed.
The lawmaker said: “On the 15 Nov. 2022, a group of militia suspected to be herders, fully armed with sophisticated weapons and ammunitions launched an attacked on Mai katako village also in Butura ward of Bokkos Local Government Area, where they killed and burnt to ashes more than 11 people.”
He disclosed that some farmers had been killed while going to the farm without any reason. He added that cows had destroyed over 300,000 farmlands.
According to the lawmakers, these killings are happening despite the location of the Operation Safe Haven of the Nigerian Army.
“Unfortunately, despite the presence of Operation Safe Haven; sector 5, the attackers appeared more armed than the security agents who could neither counter,
repel nor scare them,” he said.
He, therefore, called on the Inspector General of Police, Usman Baba, and relevant security operatives to intensify operations in the area.
Mr Maren also called on the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to provide relief materials to the displaced persons.
