Weston McKennie’s father has hit back at an Arsenal supporter who claimed the midfielder is not good enough to play for Mikel Arteta’s side.
The Gunners are in the market for a new central midfielder before the end of the January transfer window and reports in Italy this week have claimed that the club have made an enquiry about a deal for the United States international.
However, John McKennie took exception to one Arsenal fan on Twitter who questioned his son’s ability to play for the Premier League leaders.
The Arsenal fan wrote: ‘McKennie is nowhere close to being technically good enough for Arteta’s side.
‘He doesn’t have the creative passing IQ, or the positional IQ. I think [Yunus] Musah is a better American to sign if they want depth for [Granit] Xhaka’s position.’
John McKennie simply replied: ‘What are you smoking so I can get some!’
Juventus are open to offloading McKennie this month and according to Gianluca Di Marzio, Leeds United are the latest club to hold talks over a deal for the midfielder.
It’s understood that Juventus are open to selling McKennie this month and would accept a fee in the region of €25 million (£22m) plus bonuses.
Arsenal, meanwhile, continue to look to recruit a new central midfielder and have also been rejected by Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi.
Reports in Spain have claimed that the Gunners are willing to trigger the 23-year-old’s €60 million (£52.6m) release clause but the midfielder wants to remain with Real Sociedad until the end of the season.
