Former Netherlands star Wesley Sneijder has mocked Manchester United’s plans to stick with under-fire manager Erik ten Hag this week.
A disastrous 3-0 defeat at home to Tottenham has piled more pressure on the United boss who now has two games to save his job at Old Trafford.
United head to Porto in their Europa League clash on Thursday – a game with greater significance after the Premier League side were held to a 1-1 draw at home to FC Twente last week.
United return to action away to Aston Villa on Sunday with Unai Emery’s side in fine form having won five on the bounce before last Sunday’s draw at Ipswich Town.
Ten Hag will remain in charge this week but needs a swift reaction to save his job, with assistant manager Ruud van Nistelrooy considered a viable short-term solution should a change be made.
Former Real Madrid and Inter Milan star Sneijder, who was famously linked with a move to Old Trafford in 2011, has now weighed in.
Sneijder has questioned the logic behind United’s decision-making, questioning why an ‘accidental’ win this week can make up for such a poor start to the new season.
‘We now read reports: “this is the week of truth for Erik ten Hag.” What’s this all about?’ he told Rondo.
‘What if he draws vs Porto and accidentally beats Aston Villa, that would fix everything for them?
‘What this policy? So this club is already working on maybe appointing a new manager, but at the same time these two results can change everything?’
United sit in 13th place having lost three of their opening six goals. Only Southampton have scored less than ten Hag’s side with their goal difference currently at a miserable -3.
Ten Hag dismissed suggestions he was on the brink of losing his job on Sunday.
‘No, I am not thinking about this,’ he said. ‘We all made this decision to stay together, as an ownership, as a leadership group in the summer.
He continued: ‘We are all on one page or in one boat together – the ownership, the leadership group, the staff and the players as well. I don’t have that concern.’
