The Red Devils have endured an immensely disappointing season, finishing rock-bottom of their Champions League group before ending the top-flight campaign down in eighth place – their worst ever showing in the Premier League era.
However, United have an opportunity to end the season on a high in this weekend’s all-Manchester FA Cup final showdown, a repeat of last year’s clash – which ended 2-1 to City.
Rumours emanating out of Old Trafford suggest Erik ten Hag will be relieved of his duties regardless of the outcome at Wembley, with the likes of Kieran McKenna, Thomas Frank and Mauricio Pochettino all mooted as potential replacements.
And though there remains uncertainty over who will manage United next season, work is already well underway behind the scenes to determine targets for the summer transfer window, which opens for business on June 14.
Earlier this month, The Telegraph reported that INEOS were open to offers for the majority of the first-team squad, with a major overhaul expected over the coming weeks and months at the Theatre of Dreams.
Crystal Palace forward Olise, 22, and Everton defender Branthwaite, 21, have both been heavily linked on the back of eye-catching seasons and Brown – a five-time Premier League winner with United – believes the young duo would be excellent signings for his former club.
‘I’m very realistic and I’m the sort of person that always thinks about you know, who’s already done it in the Premier League?’ Brown told SPORTbible.
‘I think we need some really solid lads from other teams who have done really well.
‘I would say Michael Olise from Crystal Palace, I think he’s exciting. He’s got this rawness about him, he doesn’t look afraid of anything.’
The ex-United and England defender added: ‘I think the obvious one is someone in defence.
‘And Jarrad Branthwaite for me, is a young lad and he’s still learning, but he’s big, strong and quick.
‘I just feel that he would help out tremendously.’
Discussing United’s transfer strategy back in March, Sir Jim Ratcliffe said the club must ‘get recruitment right’ rather than trying to ‘buy success’.
‘The first thing we need to do is get the right people in the right boxes, managing and organising the club,’ United’s new co-owner told the Geraint Thomas Cycling Club podcast.
‘We must make sure we get recruitment right, such a vital part of running a football club is getting recruitment right, finding new players.
‘I’d rather find the next [Kylian] Mbappe, rather than spend a fortune to buy success.
‘It’s not that clever, is it, buying Mbappe? In a way, anyone could figure that one out.
‘But what’s much more challenging is to find the next Mbappe, or next Bellingham, or the next Roy Keane.’
