The Welsh Open gets underway on Monday morning in Llandudno, with the majority of snooker’s top stars battling it out in a crucial ranking event.
The tournament is one of the longest-running on the calendar, dating back to 1992 when Stephen Hendry beat Darren Morgan to win the first final in Newport.
Many of the greatest players to ever pick up a cue have lifted the trophy in Wales since then, while we have also had a string of shock winners, making it one of the more unpredictable events on the circuit.
The likes of Judd Trump and Ding Junhui have opted out of the tournament at Venue Cymru this time round, but the field is still packed with champions as they scrap it out for the £100,000 top prize.
This is the last qualifying event for the revamped, big-money World Grand Prix in Hong Kong, with players battling to get into the top 32 on the one-year ranking list and make it into that tournament next month.
The race is also on to be in the top 16 when the World Championship comes around in April as avoiding the perilous qualifiers is hugely preferable for the sport’s top stars.
The Welsh Open is also the final tournament in the race for the BetVictor Bonus, with £150,000 on the line and 16 players still in the running to land the cash prize.
