Wayne Rooney admits it is ‘very unlikely’ that Derby County will sign Manchester United winger Amad Diallo.

Rooney’s side are among the clubs who have been linked with the 19-year-old, who joined United in a £36 million deal from Atalanta a year ago.

The Ivorian has made just one first-team appearance this season and United are open to letting him leave in order to secure regular football.

Derby have been linked with a move, while Feyenoord have also maintained their interest after nearly signing him on loan in the summer.

But Rooney believes Derby’s hopes of securing a deal with United are slim.

‘He is a Manchester United player and obviously he is a player of interest from a few clubs, I know that,’ Rooney said on Thursday.

‘Obviously I keep close tabs on some of the young emerging talent, not just from Manchester United but from other clubs and there are various players we are looking at in terms of what players can we bring in to improve the squad, what players can we bring in to play and give us the best chance of staying up.

‘He is a player who, of course, I like him.

‘If you are asking me is he going to be with us at some point in January, then that is very unlikely.’

Fellow Championship side Birmingham City have also been linked with a move for Amad.
