The team formally known as the Washington Redskins will go by the name of ‘Washington Football Team’ for the time being, while they decide on a new permanent moniker.

The NFL side will officially retire the team’s ‘Redskins’ nickname and logo by the start of the 2020 season in response to pressure from the Native American community and sponsors.

The decision to drop the Washington name came following growing pressure from several sponsors, including FedEx, who own the $8 million (£6.3m)-a-year naming rights to the team’s stadium. Nike and Amazon had also removed the team’s merchandise from their online stores.

The franchise is now undergoing an ‘in-depth branding process’ as they look to decide on a new name and image, but ‘Washington Football Team’ will suffice for now.

On the team’s official website, a statement read: ‘For updated brand clarity and consistency purposes, we will call ourselves the “Washington Football Team” pending adoption of our new name.

‘The Redskins name and logo will officially be retired by the start of the 2020 season. We encourage fans, media and all other parties to use “Washington Football Team” immediately.

‘The decision to use “Washington Football Team” for this season allows the franchise the ability to undertake an in-depth branding process to properly include player, alumni, fan, community, and sponsor input. To date, we have been pleased to see so many people putting forward their vision of what the new name and design should be on their social media channels and we look forward to including their feedback as this process progresses.’

Washington player Ryan Kerrigan revealed the new uniform, or at least temporary uniform, on Twitter.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter also confirmed that the uniforms would not be changing colour under the new name.
