Virgil van Dijk claims he has not been offered a new contract by Liverpool but insists he is looking forward to welcoming Arne Slot to Anfield next season.

Van Dijk cut an emotional figure at the weekend as Liverpool bid farewell to Jurgen Klopp after the German drew to a close his nine-year spell as the club’s manager.

The Dutchman has become a lynchpin of Klopp’s side since his arrival from Southampton in January 2018 but faces an uncertain future at the club with just 12 months left on his current contract.

However, Van Dijk was keen to brush aside questions about his Liverpool future in the aftermath of Klopp’s departure and said that now was not the time to worry about his future.

‘My future is not important at the moment. At the moment there is nothing for me to say,’ Van Dijk said following his side’s 2-0 victory over Wolves to end the season.

‘Nothing has changed and nothing is on the table either. No changes in my situation at all.

‘The only thing I can say now is if I have a farewell I don’t think I would keep it dry [not cry] because that was something I was very surprised with with him [Klopp].’

Liverpool are set to bring in current Feyenoord boss Slot to replace Klopp, with the German even chanting his successor’s name during his farewell speech.

When asked his opinions on his new boss, Van Dijk said: ’I am very curious and have a lot of questions all the time.

‘We will see; the Premier League and Liverpool is obviously a different ball game but we are here for him, I’ll be here for him whatever he needs.

‘It is all about sticking together and giving him the chance of showing what he is capable of with the other guys who will come in.

‘He probably knows already but everyone knows our expectations are always huge and it is about managing that in the right way and getting the maximum out of all of our players. It starts with having a good break and then we are ready to go again.’
