Virat Kohli admitted Pakistan ‘outplayed’ India after his team suffered a comprehensive 10-wicket defeat in their T20 World Cup opener in Dubai.

Chasing 152, Mohammad Rizwan scored an unbeaten 78 and captain Babar Azam made 68 not out as Pakistan registered their first win over India at a World Cup.

Earlier, Pakistan fast bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi dismissed Rohit Sharma with his fourth ball and KL Rahul with his seventh to reduce India to 6-2.

Kohli held the innings together with 57 and found support from wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant (39) to take India past 150, but Pakistan cruised to victory with 13 balls to spare.

India’s captain said: ‘We did not execute the things that we wanted to but credit is certainly due – Pakistan outplayed us today.

‘When you lose three early wickets it’s very difficult to come back, especially when you know the dew is coming. They were very professional with the bat as well.

‘Hitting through the line was not as easy in the first half as it seemed in the Pakistan innings, so when you know the conditions can change, you need 10-20 extra runs.

‘But some quality bowling from Pakistan didn’t let us get off the blocks. We’re certainly not a team that presses the panic button, it’s the start of the tournament, not the end.’

Pakistan’s Babar, meanwhile, said: ‘I credit those early wickets from our bowlers, Shaheen’s wickets gave us confidence and then the spinners bowled with confidence we were happy with our death bowling as well.

‘We built the partnership after the powerplay and the wicket continued to get better with the dew. We batted deep and got those boundaries away.

‘We will play it one match at a time, this will give us confidence, there is a long way to go in this tournament.

‘As a captain I try to back my players and give them confidence, playing T20s in Pakistan has been a benefit.’
