Burnley boss Vincent Kompany believes Jurgen Klopp played a role in the yellow card he received in Saturday’s 3-1 loss to Liverpool which will now see him miss next week’s game at Arsenal.

The Merseysiders reclaimed top spot in the Premier League table thanks to goals from Diogo Jota, Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez, though the visitors caused them plenty of problems.

Both managers were cautioned in a sometimes heated affair, with Klopp booked by referee Tim Robinson for his animated protests after the Reds were denied a penalty for what he perceived to be a foul on Jota.

Kompany followed suit in the second half, with the Belgian unhappy that Liverpool’s second goal was allowed to stand despite Alexis Mac Allister appearing to kick Aaron Ramsey on the edge of the box.

The Burnley boss was relatively low-key in his protestations though, holding out his arms and asking the fourth official why it was not a foul, but was shown his third yellow card of the season – and he will now serve a touchline ban at the Emirates next weekend.

Kompany felt the booking was a little severe and, speaking afterwards, suggested it was a case of the referee wanting to even things up after showing Klopp a yellow in the first half.

‘I think I got booked because I should have paid attention to the fact that Jurgen Klopp got booked because then all I think the referee did was just went looking for me,’ said Kompany.

‘I opened my arms out, which I have done exactly that in many games. Then all of a sudden the card comes out. Out of nothing. Now I am suspended for the next game.

‘I should have known it was just a way to balance it out and it doesn’t make sense, but hey, we have to keep going. No sulking.’

Klopp had sympathy for Kompany and while he felt his own yellow card was justified, he was not entirely sure why his counterpart was booked.

The Liverpool boss said: ‘It was emotional, definitely. Imagine in this game and the referee has a blue card available?

‘It would have been the wild west. There were so many yellow cards today.

‘I had no clue why Vincent Kompany got it. I lost it in that situation so fine, give me a yellow card. As long as I don’t get a blue one and have to sit somewhere for ten minutes!’
