Verify vehicle insurance’ status with NIID, operators tell motorists

Operators in the insurance industry have said Nigerians can verify the status of their motor insurance through the Nigerian Insurance Industry Database.

The NIID, which was jointly launched by the Nigerian Insurers Association and the National Insurance Commission years back, aimed to curb fake certificates in the country.

“The policyholders whose vehicle insurance details had been uploaded on the NIID can check their motor insurance policy status by visiting www.askniid.org or by sending SMS to the USSD code *565*11# on any mobile phone with with or without Internet access,” according to the NIA.

The Director-General, NIA, Mrs Yetunde Ilori, while explaining the benefits of the NIID, said, insurance gives peace of mind to the holders.

The Deputy General Manager, Corporate Communications & Investor Relations, Sovereign Trust Insurance Plc, Segun Bankole, said the reason for verifying the status of the motor insurance by the policyholders was to ensure the originality of policy, so that when there was claim, a policyholder could be paid.

He said it also saved the holder from embarrassment when stopped on the road by the law enforcement agents.

“knowing the status of your insurance policy is necessary because it gives the holder peace of mind that when there is claim he will be paid,” he said.

Bankole said the benefits of having genuine third party insurance were enormous.

He said the consequences of having a fake insurance policy included embarrassment by the law enforcement agents.

It was also against the law for motorists to drive without a minimum of third party insurance because the offender could be jailed for violation, he noted.
