The United States of Biafra (USB) has officially approached President Bola Tinubu’s administration, seeking recognition of its redeclared independence through a formal letter. The communication, signed by USB’s Acting Head of State and Deputy Prime Minister, Dr. Ngozi Orabueze, was made public on Monday.

The letter reveals that a convention held in Lahti, Finland, on November 29, 2024, marked the renewed declaration of independence, following a referendum that reportedly saw participation from over 50 million Biafrans. The voting process, conducted both electronically and physically, took place between February and November 2024.

USB claims legitimacy under the 1933 Montevideo Convention on the Rights and Duties of States, citing compliance with all statehood criteria including population, government, territory control, and capacity for foreign relations. The organization has reportedly received recognition from several UN member states, including Gabon, Haiti, Ivory Coast, Tanzania, and Zambia.

The newly declared nation, comprising 40 states, emphasizes its commitment to establishing diplomatic ties worldwide and fostering economic growth through foreign investments and entrepreneurship. Dr. Orabueze’s letter specifically calls for “peaceful and sustainable dissolution” with Nigeria, advocating for mutual respect of territorial sovereignty.

The USB’s diplomatic outreach comes despite the recent arrest of Simon Ekpa, the Prime Minister of USB, highlighting the organization’s determination to pursue recognition through official channels.
