It’ll be a very happy day for British tennis sensation Emma Raducanu if she wins the US Open final.

Not only will she have made Grand Slam history as the first qualifier to do so – but she’ll also walk away with a big wad of cash.

Each year, the US Open has a huge prize pot – in the tens of millions – and players win part of the pot each time they’re victorious.

Reaching the round of 128, all the way up to the final, can win you varying amounts of dollar. Obviously, the closer you get to the final, the more you can win.

What is the absolute top prize?

In 2021, the US Open’s top prize for the women’s and men’s singles champion is $2.5 million USD (£1.8 million GBP) a piece.

Last year in 2020, the singles winners got $3 million (nearing £2.2 million) each – so this year’s prize fund is $500,000 less than 2020’s winners got.

That’s because the US Open’s total prize fund of around $57.5 million (£41.4 million) – $57,462,000 to be exact – has been spread out differently this year.

So don’t feel too bad for the final’s runners-up. In their loss, they also get a big slice of the pie.

Each men’s and women’s singles runner-up takes home $1.25 million (£901,000) in 2021.

Here’s the breakdown for the rest of the prize winners…

  • Semifinalists: $675,000 (just shy of £487,000)
  • Quarterfinalists $425,000 (£306,000)
  • Round of 16: $265,000 (£191,000)
  • Round of 32 $180,000 (just shy of £130,000)
  • Round of 64 $115,000 (just shy of £83,000)
  • Round of 128 $75,000 (£54,000).

The prize fund varies slightly year by year, so keep your eyes peeled for 2022’s prize money on the US Open website.

In addition to pride, glory and the prize money, victors also get a rather shiny trophy to keep on their cabinet of… more trophies.
