In a case that has shocked the United Kingdom, 18-year-old Axel Rudakubana is facing sentencing today at Liverpool Crown Court for the brutal murders of three young girls at a Taylor Swift-themed dance class in Southport last summer.

The convicted killer pleaded guilty to 16 charges, including the murders of Bebe King (6), Elsie Dot Stancombe (7), and Alice da Silva Aguiar (9), along with the attempted murders of eight other children and two adults. The attack, which occurred on July 29, 2024, is considered the worst targeted assault on children in Britain since the Dunblane massacre of 1996.

Court proceedings today saw approximately 40 family members of the victims gather in the public gallery as they await justice for their loved ones. The sentencing has drawn significant attention as Rudakubana is not expected to receive a whole life order due to his age at the time of the crimes – he was 17 when he carried out the attacks.

The case has led to significant changes in UK knife legislation, with Prime Minister Keir Starmer announcing stricter regulations on online knife sales. It was revealed that Rudakubana purchased the murder weapon from Amazon for just £3.40, despite being underage at the time.

Further investigations uncovered that Rudakubana had been referred to the government’s deradicalization scheme, Prevent, on three separate occasions between 2019 and 2021. The convicted killer was also found in possession of ricin and terrorist materials, adding to the severity of his crimes.

The sentencing hearing continues at Liverpool Crown Court, where victim impact statements and prosecution arguments will be presented before Mr Justice Goose delivers his final verdict.
