A Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Mba Ukweni, has berated Governor Ben Ayade’s trip with the 18 local government council chairmen, large numbers of commissioners and other unspecified government officials in the state to France for over a week.

He said the trip is of no economic or political value to the state, adding that it is a jamboree and a sheer waste of scarce state resources.

Ukweni told Newspot that all the foreign trips he similarly embarked upon over the years have never added any value to the state, stressing that “the trip is meaningless to the people of the state.”

Penultimate weekend, the governor said the trip was necessary as it would afford him, the council chairmen and commissioners to learn new knowledge and attend an agric summit in France.

Expressing sadness, Ukweni said the staggering sums invested in the trip would have been enough to fix all the potholes in Calabar and other big towns in the state.

He said the trip has not also added any value to the commissioners and council chairmen except for the estacode.

The SAN also expressed displeasure over the governor’s preference to travel to France instead of attending the South-South governors’ forum meeting which was held at the same time in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

“His continual absence from that meeting is very detrimental to Cross River State. It is shocking and very embarrassing that the governor can abandon such an important meeting and travel to France for socialising.

“Ayade is not doing the state well at all by his incessant absence at the governors’ meeting. It is a disservice to the people of Cross River and southern Nigeria.

“What he is doing is not governance. He is only interested in fanfare.”

Meanwhile, the Deputy Governor, Prof Ivara Esu, however, defended why neither the Governor nor himself attended the South-South governors forum’s meeting.

“The governor had approved the sum of N3m to enable me represent him but the bank did not release the money. Besides, upon returning from Ogoja the previous night after official engagements, I was too fatigued to leave for Port Harcourt the next morning for the meeting.”
