Amid a bid to reduce immigration in the United Kingdom, the government has unveiled new measures.
According to James Cleverly, UK’s Home Secretary, the immigration measures are expected to take effect next spring.
The development comes as the government worries over the rising number of immigrants, which rose to 750,000 last year.
The latest figures by the UK Office of National Statistics show that of the majority of people arriving in the UK, about 968,000 are from non-EU countries.
The top five non-EU nationalities were Indian (253,000), Nigerian (141,000), Chinese (89,000), Pakistani (55,000) and Ukrainian (35,000).
Consequently, the UK government mulls an updated requirement to reduce the rising number of immigrants.
A summary of the updated immigration requirements includes an increment of the minimum salary for skilled workers’ visas, an expected increment of the minimum income requirement for family visas, an embargo on care workers bringing family dependents to the UK, scrapping of salary discounts for shortage occupation lists, an increment in the healthcare surcharge and a review of student visa.
Accordingly, the minimum salary requirement for skilled workers’ visas would increase to £38,700 per year from £26,200 per year.
In another vein, the new requirement stressed that overseas care workers can no longer bring their partners or children to the UK.
It added that the UK Government plans to review its graduate visa, which allows someone to stay in the country for at least two years after completing a course in the UK, to prevent ‘abuse.’
