The America international has a £20m release clause in his contract with Leeds after their relegation to the Championship, with the Blues expected to take advantage of the detail in his deal.
The 24-year-old has reportedly already completed part of his medical with Chelsea and had travelled to London to complete his move back to the Premier League before things dramatically changed.
The Athletic report that talks broke down and Adams is returning to Leeds instead, with nothing signed between the player and Chelsea.
The exact issue that emerged in the talks has not been confirmed, but Chelsea are continuing to pursue the signing of Moises Caicedo from Brighton.
The Ecuador international looked to be set for Liverpool after the Reds had a bid of £111m accepted by the Seagulls late on Thursday night, while the Blues saw a lower offer turned down.
However, Caicedo has reportedly made it clear that he only wants to move to Chelsea so the ball is back in their court to raise their offer and beat Liverpool to the in-demand midfielder.
Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino would not speak about specific players during a press conference on Friday, but did admit that his squad needs bolstering in midfield.
‘It’s obvious, no? It’s obvious because when you look at the squad and compare it to last season, too many midfielders left the squad,’ he said.
‘I think we have different options and are working hard to try, but always being respectful with the names that are there and with the clubs that the players belong to.’
