In a move that has drawn widespread condemnation,
President Donald Trump has stated that Palestinians in Gaza would not have the right to return under his proposed plan for the U.S. to take “ownership” of the war-torn territory.
According to an Associated Press report, Trump’s latest comments contradict earlier assurances from his administration officials, who had suggested that the relocation of Gazans would be temporary. In an interview with FOX News’ Bret Baier, Trump bluntly stated, “No, they wouldn’t,” when asked if Palestinians would have the right to return to Gaza.
Trump’s plan envisions the U.S. taking control of Gaza and transforming it into “the Riviera of the Middle East,” with the construction of secure communities away from the current conflict zones. However, his remarks have sparked outrage among Arab nations, who have sharply criticized the proposal.
Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty emphasized an “Arab consensus” against the relocation of Palestinians, stressing the importance of finding a political solution that recognizes Palestinian self-determination. A senior Hamas official, Izzat al-Rishq, condemned Trump’s approach as “absurd,” arguing that treating the Palestinian issue as a real estate transaction is a recipe for failure.
The fallout from Trump’s comments continues to reverberate, with concerns raised about the potential impact on the fragile ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in Gaza. The administration’s mixed messages have also complicated diplomatic efforts, as Trump prepares to host Jordan’s King Abdullah II at the White House on Tuesday.
