In a devastating incident on Tuesday, a tanker explosion on the Otedola Bridge in Lagos has resulted in one fatality and left three others with severe injuries. The tanker, carrying Premium Motor Spirit (petrol), erupted into flames, prompting chaos as residents and motorists scrambled to escape the scene.

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) confirmed the casualty figures, stating that three adult males suffering from severe burns were rescued and transported to the burns unit at Gbagada General Hospital. Tragically, the remains of an adult male were also recovered from the site. LASEMA’s Permanent Secretary, Dr. Femi Oke-Osanyintolu, assured that emergency responders are working diligently to extinguish the flames.

As the situation unfolded, Oke-Osanyintolu reported that the area has been cordoned off, and motorists are being urged to seek alternative routes to avoid the affected area. The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) also confirmed the incident and reported that the fire has impacted nearby structures, including a church, residential houses, and mechanics’ parks adjacent to CMD Road.

Emergency teams are on-site, battling the blaze and managing recovery efforts. However, LASTMA has expressed concern over motorists attempting to navigate through the hazardous area, labeling such behavior as extremely dangerous and urging caution.

The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service has joined the response, addressing the fire that erupted from the tanker accident at approximately 8:00 PM. The agency reported that a 30-tonne DAF Gas Truck was involved in the incident.
