In an emotional twist following one of football’s most exhilarating showdowns, tragedy struck in Calabar, Cross River State, as a senior police officer, Inspector Stephen Enang, reportedly slumped and died shortly after watching Arsenal’s emphatic 3–0 win over Spanish giants Real Madrid.
The heartbreaking incident occurred on Tuesday night at a popular football viewing centre on Abang-Asang Street. Enang, a native of Ekori in Yakurr Local Government Area and an officer attached to the Akim Police Division, was said to be in high spirits throughout the UEFA Champions League clash.
“He was vibrant and full of life, cheering every goal with uncontained joy,” said a close friend who witnessed the incident. “Arsenal scored the first, second, and third goals, and he kept leaping with joy. But after the final whistle, we noticed he wasn’t moving like the rest of us. That’s when panic set in.”
Despite immediate efforts by friends to rush him to the Police Hospital in Akim, all attempts by medical personnel to revive the inspector were unsuccessful. He was later pronounced dead.
Inspector Enang, described by colleagues as soft-spoken and deeply passionate about football, especially Arsenal, was mourned deeply by friends and family.
At the time of this report, efforts to reach the Cross River State Police Command’s spokesperson, SP Irene Ugbo, for official comments, proved unsuccessful.
This sudden tragedy serves as a grim reminder of how deeply sports can impact emotions and health, particularly for fans with underlying conditions. It also casts a shadow over what should have been a joyous moment for Arsenal supporters across Nigeria and beyond.
